Would Your Site Survive without Search Engines?

Ever wondered how the web might be different if there weren’t such things as search engines? How would site owners approach the marketing of their site if all you had were other site owners to tell your story to, so that they would talk about you.

I think search engines have made us both lazy, dependant and frightened of trying alternative online marketing methods because of the repercussions that search engines may penalise or not include you in their index any longer. There is a irony to all this in that many websites are never found anyway for lack of structured search strategy and had little to lose by trying. Currently there is still room for site owners to market their sites using SEO & SEM however how long until this becomes saturated and the cost of performing this type of online marketing becomes too expensive for the small business site owner who is pushed out of the market by conglomerate corporations and market capitalists.

In the offline world we use a range of methods to spread the story of our brands, products, and services so we can sell more to make more money so we can have a better life with very little hesitation about how we do it providing we have the marketing budget to pull it off. However in the online world, we hold ourselves back hoping that the search engines will find our sites and be the magical silver bullet that brings us financial freedom and opportunities of a lifetime.
